MikeGoesFlying is an RC Hobby retail website built and maintained by the Greenshields family. With 3 generations of modelers, our passion to the hobby had evolved to include supplying hobby goods to our fellow modelers.
Today the hobby world is diverse and exciting and well served by many great hobby companies. However, we have lately found that many basic modeling needs have not been met by both hobby stores and online shops alike. So, we're humbly here to fill that gap, bringing you products we know are GREAT from companies that are dedicated to our hobby too.
We’re Dedicated to the TRUE Champions: Those Who Fly For FUN!
John Greenshields, co-founder and partner in Mike Goes Flying, passed on Dec 25, 2021. He will be sorely missed in so many ways.
A small excerpt of John's life:. John was born in Oklohoma and grew up on a farm with his parents and sister and brother. John is a United States military veteran (Army, Korea) and a hobby industry veteran.
John has been involved in the hobby since the 1940's. From an early age, John has always had a fascination with flying; he got his pilot’s license before his car license in 1946. In the 1960’s John worked with hobby greats like Hi Johnson Engines. In the late 1960’s, John began work with Paul Bender at the original Hobby People. In 1972 when Paul Bender broke from Hobby People in Los Angeles and started Hobby Shack in Buena Park, John was the first, and only, employee. He grew with the company as it grew. He served as Hobby Shack’s General Manager until his retirement in 1995. Since then, John has been involved with the continuing development and service of RC plane engines. John leads the company based in the high desert. His home field was the Victor Valley Flyers in Hesperia, CA where John was a lifetime member.
John will be missed.
Mike grew up in the hobby, flying R/C models since he was about 6 years old. Through the 1980’s Mike worked in the Hobby Shack stores while attending high school and college. In the 1990’s Mike was part of the Hobby Shack/People corporate team and a contributing editor for Hobby Merchandiser during that time. Enter the 2000’s where Mike was promoted to Vice President and directed product development of lines like WattAge, Airtronics, and Magnum and later directed the Hobby People Retail stores. Today that passion for the hobby and the industry continues in many forms, from dedication to developing our R/C engine line to involvement in his local RC club. Mike’s home field is OCMA in Irvine CA. Mike has served on the board of the Scale Squadron of Southern CA for several years running.
Today, Mike Goes Flying is inspired by John and his passion for aviation and continues on full-speed-ahead as a family owned and operated business. MGF is a family effort. Tim, Mike's oldest, operates the website and all things I.T., Chris works behind the scenes on everything from Inventory organization to accounting, Mike's daugher Brittany assists with marketing and photo-imaging, and wife Lisa not only generously tolerate Mike's hobby, but supports the operation of the business. It's truly a family affair.
